Channel Guide Magazine 9/23 on True’s newest Comedic Docuseries:

Syfy docuseries “Town of the Living Dead” follows one town’s undying effort to make a zombie film

Zombie films and TV shows are hot right now, but the folks in Jasper, Ala., may have been ahead of the trend — six years ago they began efforts to make a zombie movie (called Thr33 Days Dead; don’t ask us how it is supposed to be pronounced) based on a town urban legend. It remains unfinished, and their attempts to finally complete the film are chronicled in the new Syfy docuseriesTown of the Living Dead, which is a nice complement to the network’s ongoing scripted zombie series Z Nation, airing on Fridays.

Thr33 Days Dead itself sounds like a typical zombie flick, based on the description provided: “a group of friends trying to survive a zombie apocalypse in rural Alabama.” But it’s not the film that is necessarily of interest here. The series focuses on following the intrepid and motley crew of amateur filmmakers as they struggle to get to a final cut of their film (which Syfy says could someday be shown on its network).

A documentary about the making of a low-budget horror flick sounds a little like American Movie(about the making of Coven), which isn’t a bad thing. If Town of the Living Dead brings that same type of quirkiness, it should be worth checking out for those interested not only in zombies, but in the indomitable spirit of indie filmmakers as well.

Town of the Living Dead airs Thursdays at 10pm ET on Syfy beginning Oct. 7.
